Every program seems to involve plateaus. This is because the body does not progress in a straight line. You will not progress the same day after day even if you eat the same thing day after day. This is because you are not the same person day after day. Some days you feel energetic and full of life. Other days, you may feel drained and sluggish. There is a very complex “symphony” of chemicals that are in flux every day according to hundreds, if not thousands of factors. So, be patient. Here are a few explanations as to why plateaus occur.
The first is water retention. The body will hold on to water while the it breaks down excess soft tissue. This usually lasts a couple of days.
The second usually happens during the second half of a program when a person is progressing very fast initially. When this happens, the body will plateau usually for 4 to 6 days.
Third is a longer plateau of 10 days to two weeks. If you were at a fixed point for a very long time in the past, this may be considered a sticking point for the body.
And fourth is attributed to the menstrual cycle in women.
