As you develop your whole body health road map, consider adding some simple yoga to your daily routine (based on your personal level of health and well-being, of course). The Sunrise Salute (or Salutation) is a short series of basic yoga poses that is sure to increase your flexibility. You’ll soon hear fewer of those joint pops and creaks as you move throughout your day.
The following article from Examiner.com illustrates some of the whole body health benefits that can be achieved by adding these morning stretches to your regime. Give morning stretching a chance to lift your spirits and that coffee pot may not call to you in quite the same way!
Yoga Sun Salutation offers whole-body benefit as both a warmup and workout
What is a Sun Salutation?
The Sun Salutation is a flowing sequence of 12 postures that alternately stretch the spine forwards and backwards with coordinated breathing to provide a complete low-impact workout for the body and mind.
Each position counteracts the one before, stretching the body in a different way and alternately expanding and contracting the chest to regulate the breathing.
The Sun Salutation touches most of the major muscle groups in the body, stretching and strengthening the back, stomach, hamstrings, quads, and arm muscles.
It ventilates the lungs and oxygenates the blood, tones up the digestive system, and normalizes the endocrine system. When done at a fast speed it provides a good cardio-vascular workout, whereas when done at a slower pace it feels grounding, meditative, and relaxing.
It can be a complete practice in itself or a preparation for a deeper yoga routine.
